Dates of Japanese Festivals in 2025
Every year I put a huge amount of time into researching Japanese festivals in the coming year, and checking all the dates.
There are so many festivals in Japan: fire festivals, cherry blossom festivals, summer fireworks, events at temples and shrines, kite competitions, boat races and geisha performances and dancing.
Some are fascinating: did you know there’s a festival where people paint faces on their bellies, turning them into funny characters that perform dances? Or a ceremony for old embroidery needles, to honour their years of service?
Where there’s space, I’ve included a few words to explain what each festival is. You won’t believe there are so many! And some of them are so interesting.
You can use it to plan when you want to go to Japan, and to make sure you don’t miss out on any festivals when you’re there. Or just look them up at home and discover more about them!
Original Artwork
Each month has original artwork by Amy Crabtree of Cakes with Faces, featuring scenes from around Japan. The 2025 calendar will have all-new artwork (the photos are of previous years’ calendars, to show you what it’s like).
This time the artwork style’s slightly different, with more of a painterly feel and watercolour style colouring. I thought I’d try out a new style this time – the more I’ve been painting in watercolours for fun at the weekends, the more I wanted my digital artwork to be a little more free as well.
Each month has a small description with interesting facts and background information to tell you more about it.
Size and Format
It’s a stapled wall calendar, that’s A3 size when it’s hung up on the wall (that’s 29.7cm x 42cm). There’s a hole so you can hang it up easily. Each page is full colour.
