Pop-up Theme Cafes in Japan, 2026
Here’s a list of temporary, pop-up theme cafes in Tokyo and around Japan in 2026. As well as permanent themed restaurants, there are lots of limited time, collaboration cafes with popular characters, movies and games. They’re usually announced near the time of opening, so check back to see what’s new.
Making a reservation is highly recommended, because they’re very popular!

Hanamaru Obake Cafe

A kawaii theme cafe for Hanamaru Obake, a cute ghost character from Sanrio. The dishes are really adorable!

Hello Kitty Buffet

A dessert buffet featuring Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel at the Hilton Hiroshima, with an autumn picnic theme.
Sumida Aquarium Afternoon Tea
Tokyo: Hyatt Centric Ginza
1st July – 31st August 2026
A special underwater themed afternoon tea in Tokyo. It’s a collaboration between the hotel and Sumida Aquarium.
Pingu Afternoon Tea
Yokohama: Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel
15th June – 31st August 2026
Summer festival themed Pingu afternoon tea at a hotel in Yokohama (an easy day or afternoon trip from Tokyo). There’s also a Pingu themed hotel room.
Cinnamoroll Afternoon Tea
Tokyo: MOSKA by Ginger Garden, Aoyama

A very fancy afternoon tea featuring Cinnamoroll, at a gorgeous cafe that’s filled with flowers.
Aquarium Dessert Buffet
Fukuoka: ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Fukuoka
30th May – 27th September 2026
A collaboration with Marine World at Uminonakamichi. A fancy aquarium themed dessert buffet in Fukuoka, with 40 different dishes.
Rilakkuma Cafe
Tokyo: Brunch Park, Akasaka
27th August – 13th September 2026
An extra kawaii theme cafe featuring Rilakkuma relaxing in parfaits and curry rice dishes.
Attack on Titan Theme Cafe
Tokyo: BOX cafe&space Lumine Est Shinjuku 2nd Store
3rd September – 12th October 2026
A theme cafe for the anime Attack on Titan, with dishes inspired by the characters, as well as “wall” honey toast. The graphics are from “The Last Supper” on the eve of their decisive battle.
Persona 30th Anniversary Cafe
Tokyo: Harakado, Harajuku
12th – 27th September 2026
Osaka: Callab Index, Shinsaibashi
Now finished
A collab between Persona and Harakado department store in Harajuku to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the game. As well as a pop-up cafe on the 6th floor, there’s a pop-up merch shop on the 7th floor rooftop terrace.
My Hero Academia Cafe

A theme cafe for the anime and manga My Hero Academia, with chibi versions of the characters wearing yukata, like at a summer fireworks festival.

A theme cafe to celebrate the release of Chiikawa’s first movie: “Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island”. The dishes are really well-themed – there are even rabbit-shaped pancakes and a drink that comes in a cage!
Hamtaro Cafe
Tokyo: The Chara Cafe, Tokyu Plaza Shibuya
28th August – 29th September 2026
A Hamtaro theme cafe called “Ham-chans” cafe. The dishes have cut-out hamsters on them – the pizza’s covered! And there are printed lattes. There’ll be special sets for the characters’ birthdays.

A kawaii cafe for cute character Esther Bunny. It’s very pink, with a 50s American diner theme.
Aquarium Buffet

A sweets and dessert buffet presented by the hotel in collaboration with a local aquarium.

@Home is a well-known maid cafe (it’s very cute!). During this collab with kawaii characters Sumikko Gurashi, there’ll be a special menu at the cafe.

Tokyo: Concept Cafe Ginza by Sweets Paradise
From 10th October 2025 (for one year)
A theme cafe in Ginza featuring characters Opanchusagi, Npochamu and Kimimaro. Unlike most pop-up cafes, it’ll be open for a whole year!
