This is a design that’s been in my sketchbook for ages, so it’s good to finally scan it in and draw it up in vectors!
Kokeshi dolls always have the same haircut and look identical, so I thought it would be fun to imagine them before they’re cut into shape, when they still have their individual personalities.
I wanted it to be really bold and colourful, with bright, contrasting colours for the dolls’ outfits and hair. Messy hair’s fun to draw in vectors with the pen tool – I wanted the tall spikes on the doll on the far right to be a little wonky, like a sugar-spiked mohican that’s only just holding its shape.
